Young Car Driver got in touch to ask me to spread the word about their competition to win a sat-nav. It makes getting lost one less thing to worry about on today's busy roads. I wish my parents had had one, it would have saved me from being sick all down my cardie every time we went out. The prize is a Garmin HUD+ head-up display, worth more than £159. It pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, and includes the Navigon sat-nav app (alone worth £75) which transmits data to your HUD+. Navigon offers speed camera alerts, assistance choosing the right lane on motorways, an estimated time of arrival, and the navigational features you’d associate with a standalone sat nav. This information is projected on to the inside of your windscreen, but don’t block your view. I don't know if I could have plugged such a clever gadget into my first car, a 1957 Metropolitan Convertible. It didn't look so beautiful when it arrived. The paint was grey primer and it had strange little fins stuck on the back, so I spent a year working on it before getting behind the wheel. Not such a problem as I didn't have a driving licence - even though I'd accidentally got a job as road test assistant with Autocar magazine. More about my cars here.
