Do they mean us? Women in car advertising

Car ads featuring women range from the stylish to the downright barmy. Mad Men famously compared the E-type to a woman with the line "At last, something beautiful you can truly own". In real life women are often positioned in the car looking alluring as if to say "If you get one of these, you might get me!". The nadir was probably the run of 1980s' ads including "If this car was a lady, you'd pinch its bottom" or "What happened to that nice young man your wife married?". It's clear the woman is never going to be the driver. And this continues to this day - unless it's a really small car.
