I am no longer a WGMW driving day virgin! Usually it's we journalists who are presented with rows of cars laid out like tempting sweets on a tray. At the Western Group of Motoring Writers' annual driving day at Castle Combe circuit, we are the hosts while the PRs get to do the driving. I enjoyed my first event, spending most of the day outside in the sun, looking after two games and chatting. Entry for each brainteaser was £1 for our nominated charities. We also had an auction, a raffle and some donations all adding up to almost £850. The funds will be divided between WOMAC and the Guild of Motoring Writers' Benevolent Fund. One great aspect to this day was unintended: most journalists are men; a lot of PRs are women. So lots of women were getting to have a play in cars including the Bentley GT V8 and McLaren. (The MX-5 didn't stand still for long all day.) Click for more photos. Sponsors for the day were: Newspress, Mazda, VW, Kia, Nissan, Vauxhall, Ford, Castle Combe and Lee Peck Group |
