Was Queen Alexandra the first back-seat driver?
Her husband, King Edward VII was bought the first royal car, a Daimler 6hp Mail Phaeton, in 1900 when he was still Prince of Wales. He owned a number of Daimlers, and there was even an Edwardian papperazzi shot of him driving his new 22hp Daimler on the cover of The Car Illustrated in 1902.
Alexandra wrote to her children that she had every confidence in their father as a driver saying: “I poke him violently in the back at every corner to go gently and whenever a dog, child or anything else comes in our way!”
