I was thinking the same thing the other day, when when I was asked to rejoin WOMAC (Women on the Move Against Cancer). When I first became a patron in the 1980s, the committee was crammed with women at the top of PR departments, one ran her one motorsport PR business, one committee member and one patron each edited the motoring section of a national newspaper. They all had influence and budget they could use to help raise money. These days WOMAC has to have male 'Friends', because there are simply not enough women in this position any more.
Why? I have no idea. You can't tell me the talent is not out there. You can't help feeling women are not seeing the auto industry as a place where they will thrive – and maybe they are right.
