Princess Elizabeth changes a wheel
Her Majesty the Queen was once a mechanic, and could service a truck with the best of them. At the age of 18, during the Second World War, Princess Elizabeth set an example to the youth of Britain by volunteering for the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) and trained as a driver and mechanic. No doubt, it was a PR exercise, but knowing the Queen as we do now, she probably took it seriously and worked very hard. She probably enjoyed it, too, having spent most of the war cooped up in Windsor Castle. She drove a military truck, and was promoted to honorary Junior Commander after five months. Those in the know say that in later life she was good driver, and she was frequently seen at the wheel of Land Rovers (and a Ford Granada Estate, see below).
